Harlequin

Gallery No.1 is delighted to host Harlequin a solo exhibition of recent artworks by Louisa Chambers.

Taking centre stage in the gallery space is a printed Harlequin-like figure constructed with pentomino shapes. Making reference to Pablo Picasso’s Harlequin from 1915, the torso has been reduced to a flattened form emphasised by the repeated geometric pattern of misshapen diamonds and irregular polygons depicted on the costume.

The rigidness of the Harlequin configuration is disrupted by idiosyncratic geometric motifs, suspended in an uninhabitable void. Carnivalesque structures cheekily are shifting and shaking in this invented space teasing with the viewer’s attention.

In her most recent work, Chambers' has been playfully rearranging systems, structures and repeated patterns. Appropriated references derive from architectural sources, scientific and mathematical educational manuals to the everyday drawing upon daily routines. Science fiction like objects and landscapes that often feature, present alternative visual and virtual worlds where structures govern our society and technology rules.

Louisa Chambers graduated with an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art (2005-2007) and a BA in Fine Art (First Class Honours) at the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham (2001-2005).

She has exhibited her work throughout the UK and has been a finalist in competitions such as Paint Like You Mean It at Interview Room 11 (Edinburgh 2014), Zeitgeist Open (London 2012) and John Moores 25 at the Walker Art Gallery in (Liverpool 2008). Recent exhibitions include (detail) at H Project Space (Bangkok 2014) Transition Gallery (London, September 2014) and The Usher Gallery (Lincoln 2014-2015), Pareidolia, Pluspace (Coventry 2014), Water Colour Revolution, Winsor and Newton, Saatchi Gallery (London 2014) About Painting at Castlefield Gallery (Manchester 2014), Stereoscope at Mrs Rick’s Cupboard, Primary (Solo- Nottingham 2013), Rotation at New Court Gallery (Solo- Derby 2013), Flatland at Blyth Gallery (London 2012) and Needle’s Eye at BayArt Gallery (Cardiff 2012) and Transition Gallery (London 2012).

Her artworks are held in private and public collections nationally. She is currently Artist-in-Residence at Repton School in Derbyshire and a Visiting Lecturer at Nottingham Trent University.

SYSON have organised a contemporary art auction event and exhibition which will take part in November this year, preceded by a two-week exhibition.

The auction itself will take place on Friday 14th Nov, in the evening. Booking is essential if you wish to place bids on items for sale. The 50 works of art for sale include small drawings, sketches, prints and editions, small paintings, 3D work, photography and small scale sculptures. Prices range from around £50 to £300+ 50% of the sale price will go directly to the artists and 50% goes towards the development of the Reading Room programme at SYSON gallery.

Artists selected include a broad range; from the fresh, green and recently graduated to the fully emerged, award winning kind. 50% live and work in Nottingham and 50% live and work elsewhere. 50% are female and 50% are male. Works not reaching the reserve price set in negotiation with the artist and the gallery will remain unsold. Sealed bids will also be encouraged from those booked to take part in the auction.
